Sakura Chorus, formerly “Nichigo Chorus” is a Japanese chorus group consisting of only women.   It was originally formed in 1991 by Rev. Hanaoka who was then the Senior Pastor at SJUMC.  It began as a SJUMC outreach program designed to reach a diverse group of Japanese women regardless of their religious beliefs.

There are currently 15 members with a variety of backgrounds – from housewives to successful business professionals, active and retired.  The group not only enjoys singing Japanese traditional and spiritual songs, but also values introducing Japanese culture and tradition to the local community.  The group occasionally performs during worship service at SJUMC.  We also extend our efforts to local community service by providing bi-annual concerts and visiting the Asian nursing home.  It also belongs to the Northern California Choral Association and participates in its choral festival every other year in the Bay Area.

On June 20, 2010 the group held a bi-annual concert in the SJUMC sanctuary, which was a great success with more than 200 people attending.  Some proceeds were donated to UMCOR through SJUMC to help victims of earthquakes in Haiti and Chile.

The group meets twice a month on the first and third Sundays and practices from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m.  We sing a variety of beautiful songs - those that reflect appreciation for nature, children's songs and some contemporary songs in Japanese.   We welcome anyone who is able to read basic music and Japanese alphabet (hiragana).  If you are interested in joining or would like more information, please contact:

Ayako Marshall at 422-5848 or Michiyo Laing at 967-8998.
