In-person Worship Services Postponed Until Further Notice

Our Health and Wellness Committee was formed to help the church think through the issues and guidelines for when our church should reopen.  They have been considering many inputs, including the California Governor’s guidance, the Annual Conference and the District Superintendent’s guidance, various health organizations, and our own member viewpoints through the recent survey.  Thank you to the 77 people who responded to the survey!  The majority (65%) said they were not planning to return for an in-person worship service until there is a vaccine. In addition, effective July 13, 2020, the Governor required various businesses, including places of worship, to shut down unless they can be operated outside.  Very few people on the survey were interested in a drive-in worship service.  However, there was overwhelming support for the online service!  As a result, the Committee has decided to postpone in-person worship services until further notice.  The Committee will meet again in October to reassess the situation and provide further updates at that time.  Until then, we look forward to joining with you for the online worship, children’s worship, and fellowship times!  May God bless us and keep us all until we are able to gather again in person.

South Sacramento Interfaith Partnership (SSIP) Food Closet

SSIP Provides emergency food to South Sacramento needy families and individuals.  Food drop off boxes are available in the Fellowship Hall.

Simon Yeh said SSIP still needs more volunteers (65 and younger) to help with distributing food and picking up food from grocery stores. Last month, we served around 2000 households, feeding over 7000 individuals. We cannot accomplish this without volunteers. Sac Food Bank continues to remind us that the numbers will only increase in the coming weeks and months during this COVID19 crisis.

New SJUMC Website Coming!

Many thanks to our webmaster Betty Lim-Silvernail for her hard work for over 10 years. She will be retiring as the webmaster when the new site is up. The church has hired a professional web designer, DesignOlah, to build our new website.

Care Phone Tree

You will be a part of a group of ten people. Your care leader will contact you once a week to check on you! In this way, although we do not see each other at the church, we will know you are doing ok. We are still looking for volunteers to call 9 people once a week. If you are interested, please contact Rev. Motoe.

SSIP Thanks You!

During this COVID-19 pandemic, people in need of food are supplied by the SSIP Food Closet. SJUMC is part of this partnership. Please watch this thank you video and read the thank you letter received from our SSIP Representatives.

In response to COVID-19, the SJUMC building remains closed until further notice under the guidance of the Governor and Bishop.

Verifying your checks received by SJUMC

Due to the recent break-in at the church, several people have called to research to see if we have received their envelope/check. To assist you in this process, we have prepared a list of all checks received by the church since June 25, 2020. You can call or email Cathy Mayeda at the church office (916-421-1017 or and she can let you know if your check was received and deposited (i.e., therefore, it was received and not stolen). Again, we sincerely apologize for the problems this has caused for many of you. We are working quickly to address the situation. Until we can get a permanent solution for a secure mailbox, we are working with our mailman to hand deliver mail only when someone is in the office. He is not leaving any mail in our mailbox. Please know that throughout this time of the COVID-19 shut down and the recent break-in, we are so grateful for your continued support and donations to our church, as well as God’s faithful care for us all.

Pastor is on vacation

After many months of hard work in the midst of COVID-19, Rev. Motoe will be taking vacation from July 28 to August 12. Rev. George Nishikawa will take care of the pastoral care during that time.

Message from the Ministry Intern,

Ryland Fernandez

Can I just say, it is SO good to be finished with school! It’s good to be back home, and I’m excited to begin preparing for what God has in store for me. Speaking of what’s in store for the future, I’m excited to announce that I’ll be working at SJUMC as an intern! My responsibilities will include working with our church’s youth, our circuit’s young adults, and overall contributing to the growth of young people at our church. In addition, in preparation for my call to ministry, I’ll have the opportunity to observe Rev. Motoe as she performs the duties and responsibilities of the senior pastor of a local church. I’ve learned a lot over the last few years, and I hope to apply my new knowledge and skills to SJUMC, in order to help enhance what we’re already growing and nurturing at our beloved Garden Church. With your prayers and blessings, I look forward to this new season in my life and in the life of our church! God bless you all!

New Stained-Glass Window Coming to SJUMC

The committee that helped with the original three stained glass windows, the theme of “the Way” on the south side of the sanctuary has been working for many months to help develop a design for the window on the north side of the sanctuary. Finally, after many months of deliberation and meetings with Keith Sutherland, the stained- glass designer, a design has been approved by Church Council. As with the present stained - glass window of “the Way”, we again, consulted with Dr. Courtney Goto, professor of theology at Boston University to assist us with the design and meaning for the north window. The motif is a descending dove in the center panel. The dove’s significance is the story of Jesus’ baptism where the Holy Spirit descends “like a dove” (Mark 1:10, Luke 3:22). We hope the congregation will enjoy seeing the dove, a reminder that God is with us, looking over us. This stained-glass project will probably be installed sometime in October. Many heartfelt thanks to the faithful and dedicated committee: Naomi Goto, Arlene Hagiya, and Shigeko Shibata, consultant – Dr.Courtney Goto, with briefings to Jayne Rasmussen and Reverend Motoe.
